Now that we've geofenced speed limits on thousands of 30lb, 20mph max scooters, it's time we do the same for the 278 million, 2-ton, 100+mph max cars that kill 40,000 Americans a year. If a scooter can do it, any modern car can. #VisionZero #mobility latimes.com/california/sto…
Did your rented e-scooter suddenly shut down? Blame the invisible geofence

In plain English. Most cities no have electric scooters as the norm. We don’t yet. E-scooters have automatic speed limiters. Cars don’t. Cars are huge and heavy and fast. They kill. Why aren’t their speeds limited?
If we can use geofencing to slow down scooters, surely we can use this tech to ensure giant metal vehicles--the ones that actually kill people--slow down on city streets. Right?

So look at this: it's the change in kinetic energy when you change the speed of a (compact) car from 40 mph to 20 mph, vs the same situation in a scooter... useful info?
#Liikenneturvallisuus

"In 1923, the City of Cincinnati proposed a law that would require speed governors on cars that would shut their engines off if they exceeded 25 mph" Motordom hated how '"it kept the burden of responsibility for accidents on motorists" and killed their biggest advantage: speed' pic.twitter.com/MlnS9fygfN

Virtually no limits on size, weight, and speed of cars but plenty on ebikes and escooters. I guess they must be more dangerous, or something.

How about integrating alcohol monitoring as well
Elektri🛴 automaatsed kiiruspiirajad - jah, ok, kui samal ajal ette võtta sõiduautode kui suurima ohuallika vastav kiiruspiiraja.
There are exactly zero technical reasons why we can't allow school districts/cities to ban cars within 1/4 mile of a school for the hour on ea side of school start/end other than those who live in the neighborhood.

New cars should all have speed limiters standard. Mapping tech is there. Auto tech is there. Mandate the tech and society will conform. Market this: Not a self driving car (already did that: see buses, trains) but a SAFE driving car.
This. Ideas like geofenced speed limits, something that would make cars and driving genuinely safer are being applied to 30 lb scooters first??
Yet another attack on drivers’ rights in the WaR oN cArS!!!1!!

It is almost as if keeping people alive and uninjured is only a priority when bikes, ebikes, and escooters are involved. Collateral damage is fine when cars and trucks are involved.

I’d have no issue with limiting my car, but it really needs to be mandated to all privately owned vehicles to have a safety and environmental impact. A percentage of insurance premiums should then go into funds for sustainable transport

Good idea, and then relating maximum speed to the weight of the vehicle. Must make SUV's less desirable! And makes sense when thinking about damage control.

Speed limits for cars are often based on what is and not what should be. Even when there are reasonable speed limits, they are not enforced.
Would love to see this!

@ArlingtonVA - we could start by geofencing car2go and zipcar and the County's own fleet
Pedestrians, cyclists, and transit users must team up in our #AnythingButCars battle to make urban areas usable again!

In edmonton they have restricted them so heavily they are essentially useless. They work in the bar strips and that's it... can't even use them for a short commute, or to get home from downtown (and I only live 10 minutes from downtown by bike) Useless @limebike - #yeg #yegcc

At one point the geofences on Lyft and Bird scooters had them locking up when waiting at a traffic signal to cross the 16th St pedestrian mall. Would have to DRAG them half a block down the road, their anti-theft sirens going all the while.
