Sad to hear of the death of actor Derek Fowlds; he delivered one of the greatest comedy lines in 'Yes Prime Minister' during the Thatcher era - a comedic observation that sadly became the harbinger of truth in the 21st century!

This was always one of my favourite scenes, when Sir Humphrey explains that the reason the UK joined the EEC was to destabilise the whole project. That was when the idea was satire, of course. youtube.com/watch?v=ZVYqB0鈥
Real shame to hear of Derek Fowld's death. He was a legend.

Yes Minister/Prime Minister was cutting edge satire at the time; delivered by quality actors who knew their craft. Sadly, the actors have passed on, the era is no more & their satire of government has been eclipsed by the stupidity of actual politicians. We live in sad times.
Enduring genius. Inspired me to finally buy copies of the original books. This clip is one of many that have me in stitches. In the top 5 TV series of all time.

The fact that all three of them 'corpsed' during that says all you need to know about how accurate that genius script was... and still is. I bet that was the best of many takes. RIP Derek Fowlds.
Heartbreakingly brilliant. RIP Derek Fowlds.
Rest in peace, Derek Fowlds, aka Bernard in 'Yes, Prime Minister.'
One of the greatest jokes from one of TVs greatest series.
Just brilliant. Three of the finest, and now, sadly, all gone.

I thought he was long since. What a lovely man. And what a great programme, bring it back please
On the mark and still funny. And tragic
Cannot beat this! Brilliant.
Just played this to @RileyJMatt who is too young to remember - amazed they got away with it tbh!

Classic and so relevant today.
I鈥檓 probably too young for 鈥測es prime minister鈥, but I wish I鈥檇 seen that years ago, it would have explained a lot! 馃槀
What a piece of script writing.
RIP, #DerekFowlds .

And yes: arguably the greatest and most insightful #media comedy line ever.
So sad to hear about Derek Fowlds. He was amazing in Yes Minister and Yes Prime Minister. My favourite programmes when I was 11.
Have a laugh...but still so much truth

Sorry to read this. Derek was also one of the very best straight men to put up with Basil Brush. youtube.com/watch?v=YwqtWg鈥
One of the greatest sitcoms ever made - 'Yes Prime Minister'. RIP Derek Fowlds!
Derek Fowlds was an amazing talent, and this is one of the finest lines in British comedy.
Still as relevant today 馃槀
Still brilliant after all these years. 馃槉
Enjoyed all his work, but his line in this clip was superb!
So correct - did they mention the Express, god help us.
Brilliant! So true.

Its writing was so strong, that even today it hardly appears dated (one scene where they get a train and another where they are in a Ford Cortina aside!)...

Aw how sad... loved him in The Good Life
Possibly the finest example of TV comedy writing and performance. Just glorious.
Brilliant as ever
All of that is still to this day absolutely 100% spot on.
Comedic genius..... RIP Derek Fowlds 馃槩
This. Still pertinent, accurate, and...well...you make your own mind up.
This is how you deliver a line.

There is an episode, where the minister for a few vote goes against the interest of the country.

That rules out Mrs Timore then.

He was great in a great show. Thatcher insisted on watching it!

The whole series should be compulsory watching for anyone eligible to vote, or likely to be 馃榾
...brings tears of sadness & tears of joy. The truth in this is harder to bear.
So sorry. Likely the first tv show to puncture the pomposity of politicians and make us all realize there are no adults in the room.
RIP Derek Fowlds. A class act.
Legendary line 馃榾
Superb comedy. Never bettered.
馃枻 Amazing show. RIP Derek Fowlds.
Brilliant... watch to end.
Greatest writing ever; still as true today as it was then.
