Louis-Edmond Hamelin passed away this week. He was a Quebec geographer who developed the academic concept of ‘Nordicity’ - a measure of northernness - that went far beyond latitude. On a scale of 1-1000, the North Pole ranked 1000. Timmins, ON would be ~70. /1

So much of what we do in Arctic studies is based on latitude. But Hamelin’s work helps explain why it is unproductive, even counter productive, to compare most of e.g. Arctic Canada and Russia to e.g. the Barents region. Their difference in nordicity is astounding. /2
This is very sad. He was a light. He once sent me a nice little note about a paper I wrote (in 1990) that paraphrased his work. I've met scholars recently who are using #nordicity in interesting ways. @ExnerPirot, you're spot on. Nordicity varies.
