Add Ryan Newman to the endless names of drivers who Dale Earnhardt saved. The Intimidator kicked ass on the track but one could argue his greatest legacy is the safety enhancements that came around because of his tragic death. (Photo by USA Today Sports)

Today felt real weird. Dale was watching over him.

How he survived that is nothing short of amazing. Worst crash I’ve ever witnessed.

It felt really similar to Dale's wreck, only difference was it took so long to report an update. Hans device, soft walls, many improvements thanks to Dale. Too bad we lost him, but just think how much safer racing is because of him.

Felt like I was watching Geoff Bodine all over again. I’m still not sure how either survived.

I'm an open-wheel fan and couldn't have picked Newman out of a line-up before this, but I watched the ending live, and those two hours waiting were absolutely brutal. Just incredible that he survived that.

That was the worst NASCAR wreck I think I’ve ever seen. It was eerily similar to the crash that took BC. A huge impact right to the driver area. This is a testimate to the NASCAR R&D teams. There’s no reason he should have survived a 200 mph impact right into his window. Unreal.

Respect to Dale Sr, an Icon. He is not a hero for dying. He died because he refused to use all the safety enhancements available and his tragic death forced NASCAR to change its rules and disallowed cowboys from risking their lives unnecessarily and destroying their families.

Biggest reason he’s still with us🙌🏻. I think the seats go down further than this one pictured as well. pic.twitter.com/o7TrjwN3G4

It’s an absolute miracle. I am so happy for him and agree that DE saved many.

So very true. Couldn't agree more. As fans l think we take for granted how far Nascar has come with safety. Over the last 10 years there has been probably a dozen wrecks that could have ended very badly without these improvements. Let's hope for a speedy recovery from Ryan.

Good comment - amazing Ryan is going to be ok. 🙏🏻

I just watched Earnhardt’s crash and I still don’t understand how that crash killed him. Obviously I know nothing about NASCAR but from wrecks I’ve seen his seemed like nothing serious. I’ll have to research it more

God gave us a second chance with Ryan so be thankful and lovable.

Him, Adam Petty, and Kenny Irwin Jr. have all contributed.

Couldn't imagine going upside down at 200 mph with the Sparks flying and metal grinding, #newman #NASCAR

I said the exact same thing. Dale saved Ryan’s life and countless others. What a legacy he leaves.

Very well said.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
So very true.

Still Miss The Intimidator.

Romanticizing car drivers lol. Earnhardt didn’t save anyone. He died tragically, then NASCAR got safer. Thank NASCAR

i mean, the only safety thing that happened after Dale Sr is them making the HANS manditory, the safer barrier was planned if not already in development and being worked on
