Exhibit of colonial racism continuing in 2021…

Let me know which countries are missing from which boxes, I wasn't able to find an authoritative source, so I pieced it together from newspaper stories.

Blaming Africa for Omicron while also refusing to release patents on vaccines is peak western imperialism

Germany has record numbers and weirdly no one is banning us...shows perfectly the anti blackness at play

This schematic diagram is a dead giveaway. Doesn't it say more about something else than the dreadful virus? pic.twitter.com/LNepeH0pbT

For 2 years the world has been waiting for an excuse to dub it an African epidemic. They are hoping this is it.

Gestión de la pandemia con sesgos de raza brings to you:

Great jerb, policymakers

I remember when a certain presidential candidate said “we need to lead the way with science not xenophobia” in response to travel bans including China at the start of the pandemic.

Now the shoe’s on the other foot and Africa is the scapegoat.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
Let's not perpetuate the lie. This is not a travel ban. EU citizens are still welcome to travel too these countries and return home. Because they magically can't get infected & transmit when they return home. This is a ban on entry of foreigners to the EU.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
While I'm completely in favour of ending any discrimination or other unjustified special treatment, can we please stop talking about "confirmed cases" and talk about "confirmed community transmission" which is the only relevant measure here?

Gotta be honest. This looks like something Donald Trump and his goons put together.

Remember how we pointed out that the Muslim Ban was a Muslim Ban despite North Korea's inclusion

Don't give the same racism cover just coz it's Biden

There's a pattern... what could it be.

They really said “No Blacks”

Once a variant reaches many other countries, some with poor epidemic control, blocking only the flights from originating countries in quite ineffective

Proof of vaccination, testing (before and after landing) and quarantine for travellers is more reasonable, although challenging

Yep - and that list on the right is only going to continue to grow.

The entire global community should praise the amazing work of researchers in #SouthAfrica - they have world class sequencing capacities and scientists which is why they detected this variant so quickly.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
I wouldn't be surprised if the omicron variant came from europe and was imported in south Africa before being found

RACISM, but make it public health.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
just wanted to note that HK caught the cases in quarantine. we have more or less zero cases inside here for a long time.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
I think its such a dynamic field that its almost impossible to map, eg sensibly Israel has simply stopped all international arrivals as its clear it has spread from Southern Afirca to numerous countries already. Will change rapidly in the next few days until we know more about it

This is the sort of racism I expect from the former president, but Biden did say nothing fundamental would change didn't he

In reply to @benphillips76
White folks, does this venn diagram surprise you?

These travel bans are not only ineffective, they also actively discourage countries from being transparent about their caseload.

Again: we need a planetary (as opposed to a global) FDA & CDC. Our politics may care about borders, but the microbes don’t.

🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

Trying to find the right word to describe this irrational discrimination…

This says a lot -- none of it good.

This what I was saying before, like what is going here?

Singapore had a nasty variant, very little was said, no new big name, no travel bans

But now we have a new strain and most the countries banned dont have cases and most the countries with cases arent banned

Suspicious 🤷‍♂️

Seems kinda, I dunno, racist?

Dhon mahujanun corona hifaagen naanaanane raajje akah

It’s giving racism

🤔🧐 What on earth could account for this

Pra África só o ônus e a punição, sempre!

this whole pandemic has showed us america and almost all of europe will wait for the minor excuse to be racist and ban the rest of us from entering their territory and i’m fucking tired of it

Es ist eine rassistische Welt.

HEAR ME OUT, WHAT IF, #OmicronVariant was actually from EU?
Early November:
*Germany registered 50,000 new cases
*Netherlands recorded +16,000 (their highest since the start of the pandemic)
* Austria,Denmark & France were looking at new lockdowns.
But guess who kept travelling?

Our gov (at the behest of Capital) continues to make inconsistent rules based on money rather than preventing COVID spread.

This leads to people being skeptical of government advice, like “get this vaccine”.

This all prolongs the pandemic.

A little bit of racism is the basis of good public health 🤮😱

In case you need a visual.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
Omicron is probably already in most countries. Banning travel from countries where HIV is high, vaccination and testing are low makes sense. Poverty correlates with a lot of different problems.

It's pretty clear from the data that omicron didn't originate from SA, but was detected there because SA has some of the best virus tracking and sequencing infrastructure in the world. Racism always goes hand in hand with bad policy and puts everyone at risk.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
I am so pissed about this. To make things worse, the ban was instituted in a panic on very little data.

Travel bans at this point are just about racism and politics.

We're 2 years into the pandemic and the US behaves as if it is seeing something new. Best way is to test, trace and quarantine. Impose mandatory 14 day quarantine for those coming in.

This is a good moment to remind that if a variant is detected in a place, doesn't mean that appeared/developed on that place

The racist dynamic on the variant's place of detection is a huge problem that we need to face, to prevent unnecessary travel bans fueled by racism

It is getting exhausting to keep making a case for Africa.

In reply to @asmallteapot
South Africa is getting absolutely screwed by the Global North for doing the right thing. Shame on us all.

Hm.

Interesting, is all.

Just... interesting.

This reminds me of how my dissertation work in Ghana was shitcanned because of an Ebola outbreak in a neighboring country. The US had more active cases than Ghana

In reply to @kalina_chung
*Shrek voice "please. White countries. Can you stop being racist about covid. FOR FIVE MINUTES

Honesty with consequences…..it’s everywhere.

Nunca foi saúde, sempre foi higienismo colonialista. 😒

Raise your hand if you know *exactly* what's going on here...

In reply to @TrevorABranch
You could also name the red box "countries who are good at sequencing and finding variants" and it seems like a bad idea to punish those countries.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
Now redo the graph for *community spread* locations, rather than just quarantined-imports. Europe has excellent vaccine surveillance, esp. the UK. Omicron simply is not common there. It is common in SA. And thus likely its less-survived neighbors. Imports evidence this.

In reply to @TrevorABranch
✊🏿✊🏿✊🏿 we still refuse to die

For all you “I don’t understand how this is racist” asses

I wonder what the banned countries all have in common? Hmmmm this is a puzzle! 🤔

In reply to @TrevorABranch
Hong Kong cases are different. Both cases emerged from quarantine, not local spread. It was originally just one, but he spread it to his neighbouring room.

Wonder what the reason for this is?

In reply to @TrevorABranch
FYI there is o in probably all of the countries in green the just don't have screening in those countries

It’s interesting how African countries get banned so easily when the variant could have come from anywhere.
