Initial observations sometimes show the newly discovered #asteroid has a chance of impacting Earth, and in these cases researchers use their early orbit calculation to predict where their asteroid might have appeared in the past, in archival images sometimes decades old ...

... these past images are searched to see if the 'new' asteroid has in fact been lurking. If they spot it, researchers can extend the 'arc of observation' back through time and space, to project forwards a very precise path for the object.
