whenever I read about "undergrads thinking they can dunk on some old famous philosopher" I am reminded of this stuff... maybe the undergrads are right?!

The before clips are NOT 1912. The sports apparel alone is a dead give away but then you throw in some color clips. (Makes the change that much more amazing. Thank you very much Title IX.)

People in the present work too hard. Time to go back to phoning it in and going down the pub at 3 in the afternoon.

Getting published in a peer reviewed journal, 100 years ago vs. today…
while the 1912 videos might be fugazi, this is evidence that older generation athletes aren’t better than newer ones. It’s all folk lore
“You drop Russell Westbrook in the Cousy days and they would think he was a witch.”- Anon

None of this footage is from 1912. The older footage is from the 1950-60s. What this actually shows is that the rate of athletic progression has been even greater than implied by the deliberately misleading dates. Also, the "2012" footage is of the 2016 US Olympic Trials.

Grant review panel expectations 20 years ago and now.

Further explains the argument about who "the goat" is. It has to be separated out by decade. You cant lump athletes from today in with people from 30 years ago
I would've cleaned tf up in 1912
I love how women's gymnastics went from a pretty little activity where you might break a sweat to absolutely f*cking badass. #girlpower
It's almost as if older Olympics weren't comprised of people pushed from birth to be stunning athletes, with a whole team behind their existence.
Them hoes in 1912 were ass
Same for football that's why I don't subscribe to the Pele is the greatest ever school of thought.
Bitcoin vs Ethereum

It's not difference in ability, but rather difference in objectives and techniques. Humans from the early 20th century were as physically capable as humans of today. We just used to think differently.
effort required to own property from a millennial vs boomer
Exactly how wrestling evolved
"People just don't want to work anymore."
If you think the video below is from 1912, I have some beach front property in Kaduna for to sell you
Fits @ConorHughes67 tweet the other day. Obviously, different sport but a great video comparison.
given everything that's come out about women's elite gymnastics over the last 5+ years, it's hard to just see differences of athletic ability here.
not a fair comparison. back then ladies had much denser, heavier bones and skin.
Similar techniques but 100x faster. Cuts across all sports.

I see people attribute some tactics, systems and structures as modern day innovations. What they call “modern football” existed decades ago.

The real modern football is TAA at RB but with a different profile.

Yeah, 100 years ago they knew not to destroy the body for sport. Today, those gymnasts will be in pain and struggling physically for the rest of their lives.
This is literally the evolution of the skills required to compete in academia.

Proof we are definitely evolving as humans. 😱
a huge point people who whine about seed oils and obesity miss is that healthy people today are bigger faster stronger and live longer than ever before if they put in a bit of effort

i think with the skill i have rn i could win the 1954 Olympics

The sport evolved and coaches learned from those of the past. Boxing had the same evolution. The way those fighters use to Box 100+ years ago would get them destroyed by most modern fighters. Nobody fights with their guards like this anymore. pic.twitter.com/kWjZORodv9

More like 1960 than 1912 ... but still an interesting comparison. The old vault is so tame.

It’s not a change in ability, it’s a change in the discovery of technique, adaptation and building upon what’s possible. The first car didn’t have air conditioning, a radio or power steering.
Evolutionen går framåt, skönt.
Jinej sport.

Kdybyste dali vedle sebe košíkovou a basket, dopadne to stejně. Nejde to.

Je. To. Úplně. Někde. Jinde. Fakt.
Ninjas started coming in and raised the bar. #otnfvr
Pushing boundaries is what we (humans) are all about. Watch these inspiring women move in ways only most of us can dream of.

So why is Fission energy still moving like those girls from 1912? Because others see clear potential to wipe the floor with enough focus and attention.
!00 lat temu 1000 atletów razy 1000 zjedzonych kotletów nie dałoby rady lokomotywie, jak słusznie zauważył Tuwim. Dzisiejszy atleta na pokazie strongmenów ciągnie ciuchcię sznurkiem w buzi aż miło i jeszcze mu pary staje.
I love 100 year comparison videos simply for the fact that it shows how different criteria standards are now adays compared to a decade prior.
Evolution of a sport
Watch @DavidEpstein’s Ted talk. Things evolve with very few exceptions. A notable one is this: would you rather fight the world heavyweight champion in boxing from today or from 1974?
In reply to @historyinmemes
the bar was rather low in 1912
Unos huevos los segundos vídeos son de 1912
This is all I think about when ppl bring up their fav athlete from decades passed. No, they couldn't make it in today's game. Whatever sport your talking, nope.
so what you’re saying is i couldve been an olympian in the 1900s

I mean, some of it was pretty similar, but you have to admit that the flow, movement and control of early 1900 was elegant. This is like Tai-Chi meets your local CrossFit gym

It looks like they actually valued the lives and wellbeing of their athletes back then.
Gymnastics has sadly lost its grace and artistry due to rewarding power and high-level skills over dance elements but I still love power tumbling.
Oh buggerlugs.

I guess Cornette is now going to spend 40 minutes of a podcast explaining why the 100 year old footage is real gymnastics and the modern stuff is just flippy shit.

This translates across every sport.
Not just ability but permission and dedication.

Permission to women to portray some kind of sports, and sport routines.

Dedication as evolving from “not being paid or needing to take care of the family” to “being professionals”.

As he’s saying:
