The fuss over this is so curious for me as an American cricket fan- having watched plenty of baseball growing up, the pickoff (mankad analog) is a very standard part of the game. It’s the runners prerogative to try to get a lead but there’s an understanding they might get caught

You can get "run out" in baseball trying to steal a base. You can get stumped if you stand out of the crease for whatever reason. The keeper can wait to dislodge the bails if (s)he notices the batter may drag their feet outside. And, did the original law not originate in England?
