Think of people around the world tonight who need Twitter to get their voices heard, to document human rights abuses and injustices, to get attention, expose war crimes, and more.

All of them could be about to be cut off because the world’s richest man wanted to own the libs.

thinking of egypt, of us 15 years ago, of tweetups and communities built, of revolts and revolutions, of what twitter meant to those or us who organized, reported and connected with the world - and each other - on here.

Was just saying this! Iranian women. Ukraine. The next possible Arab spring. This is tragic.

This is spot on. Human rights around the globe will be negatively impacted if Twitter's crashes and burns. Ordinary people's life will be at greater risk by authoritarian regimes whose actions will be muted and their critics silenced.

Isn’t it telling conservatives had to be kicked off the platform while Libs are leaving because they don’t have totalitarian control of it. They can’t compete in a fair marketplace of ideas. Because they’re stupid.

Allowing a man accountable to no one to be in control of so much wealth is wrong. It's time to go back to taxing the wealthy at 1950s levels again.

Also, all the emergency services that use Twitter to warn the public of threats from weather to violent people. This may have dire consequences on the public in general.

This is very important for the people in Iran right now.

I’ve followed so many around the world who are trying to make an impact on their communities and countries. Trying to screenshot all those I follow so I can keep up with them elsewhere. It’s very sad. This site gave them a voice.

There is a solution: end neoliberalism, tax oligarchs out of existence like FDR did and re-regulate corporations.

What are we going to do without this relentlessly humorless turd in the punchbowl?

Do you really think people like that should get priority?

Because that's actually how Twitter Trends got fucked by people who were "concerned" about the world.

In reply to @mehdirhasan
The point was always to silence their voices one way or another.

Check in on friends w/ disabilities or who are homebound if we lose this site which allows them to have precious social interaction. 🙏

We all know how Instagram, Facebook and tiktok shadowban us! Twitter has been a tool to spread awareness about Artsakh 🇦🇲

He wants to stop collective democratic and progressive activism.

Mehdi is spot on as ever. I don't see the meltdown of twitter as something to laugh at.

It's really upsetting knowing so many people will be silenced & so many of our disabled whanau will be shut out. #SaveTwitter

Who would want to “own the libs”? That seems REALLY expensive. Just think of all the money for Hamilton tickets. No, thanks!

and this is why part of me, believes this was intentional..it’s just a sad situation all the way ‘round~

This. Iran, Ukraine, Syria, Palestine; climate justice fighters everywhere as the deserts and floods and storms wrack their homes.

All potentially silenced for the lols.

The mainstream media continues its 0.000 batting average.

This is intentional. The platform is too pro democracy. Hopefully we can find an alternative that operates like wiki. Maybe mastodon can be that ultimately.

This is the saddest part, something Elmer Fudd never got, that while Twitter wasn’t perfect, it did a lot of good

Posts like these have had me cracking up all night. The fact that Liberals feel so threatened by free speech is cracking me up. Ask Zuckerberg how much working with the Govt to suppress speech on FB helped him.. probably why he's laying 11k off right now

I desperately relied on twitter when I lived in a California fire zone and lost power due to power shutoffs (for the fires @PGE caused). Twitter was the only thing I could access @CAFireScanner @CALFIRE_ButteCo

To many people told this guy he was ever something more than nothing. He is not now, never was or never will be a genius, he just drinks his own kool-aid. This guy is a right place right time and throw in some lies kinda guy.

So I love ya and yall Mehdi, but nah. Elon has $44billion reasons to not let Twitter tank. And in the slimmest chances, it did... Someone out there is now building a shinier, newer twitter that everyone will switch to. Disruptive maybe, cutoff not likely.

In reply to @mehdirhasan
This whole thing is a lib self-own. Just accept Twitter is moving to be more free speech and less authoritarian left and we're gucci. All this drama and crying that you're doing is pathetic and embarrassing. Stop crying, cancelling, and engage in real discourse ffs.

As funny as the Twitter situation is, this point was not lost on me either. I am also deeply concerned at the same time for what this will do for social discourse and making people heard. I have learned a lot about social issues through Twitter.

I’m sorry but if twitter shuts down, I won’t miss it. It was an experiment gone wrong. Trump got on it and weaponized it along with the GOP. Sure there have been good things… but it’s 80% bad and 25% good. Time to move on.

Will someone think of the children and stop the evil space man

Unpopular opinion: The reports of Twitter's death are greatly exaggerated. Worst-case scenario: There's a temporary lull and @elonmusk eventually moves Twitter out of SF.

It continues to be the same town square it is now. /1

You’re getting real close to why it’s being purposefully sabotaged as a platform...

Where’s YOUR Social Media platform if you’re so concerned about “World Voices”?? I hear you crying, but what’s your solution? ‘Cause if you don’t have a solution, you’re just whining.

Uh no, silencing those sort of things is exactly part of the reason (though he probably wanted it operational for longer to also sow disinformation until Dorsey could get his protocol ratified as a standard. The narcissist probably thought employees worshipped him and would stay.

This is a real tragedy. Twitter helped bear witness to atrocities around the world and give people a way to take action. A lot of people will suffer now because we won’t be able to hear their voices. #tibet #HumanRights
