Both Trump and DeSantis made a lot of pro-lockdown decisions early on. This is an indisputable fact—plenty of factors to blame including public pressure, media intimidation, bogus models, etc. But if 2024 primary is a referendum on early COVID response, neither can claim victory.

That was March. I was in SD (Mount Rushmore; my profile pic was when I was there) on July 4th of 2020. They had no lock down, no closures, no mask mandates. They knew we were all from out of town. They still let us roam free.

Kemp did the same thing in Georgia. While he deserves and gets credit for opening the state up. It's also true that like EVERY other Gov., he followed CDC recommendation to shutter schools.

The Covid response was a complete failure of vision and leadership by both local and national republicans.

March, 13th 2020 was a crazy day. Even I bought into the “deadly mask wearing zombie apocalypse” propaganda.

Thanks for the clarification, Ryan. However, “not locking down” was never popular. Only after months or years. Hindsight being 20/20 and all.

Fog of war that early. Information was still being collected. Governors caught a lot of criticism for opening and/or keeping things open, when everyone else was afraid. Every Governor can declare an emergency to shut things down, like Whitmer and Newsom.

This is accurate. What is shocking is the number of people in the comments that say lockdowns were the right thing to do early on. NO THEY WERE NOT. SD legislature did the right thing, the only state in the country. We need legislation to prevent lockdowns from happening again.

I am from SD and I live in Iowa now. Yes.....schools were closed in March of 2020......in my opinion to protect the teachers as much as anything. You got her. She's guilty.
