Cats in Egypt have had a longer history than they have had in almost any other part of the world. Egypt was likely the first place where cats were domesticated 10,000 years ago & are still much loved today

It’s Caturday & to celebrate the weekend, a thread on the cats of Cairo…

Quando eu fui na exposição Egito Antigo eu fiquei um tempão só vendo as múmias dos gatinhos.

Amei esse fio sobre os gatinhos do Cairo ❤️

On the subject of cats, I'd often joke that you can tell that you're in a Muslim neighborhood in Thailand due to an overwhelming proportion of cats. Eg this old neighborhood called Baan Krua in Bangkok. pic.twitter.com/YNSmZjcxRr

Fun fact: the word "cat" in ancient Egyptian is pronoun "mau" or "meow"

Simba’s grandfather is an Egyptian Mau and Grandmother is an Asian leopard cat. Here’s a photo of him after an intense session of hunting his own shadow. pic.twitter.com/sWZB1f9VZV

Actually in Islam we believe that cats were created from the sneeze of a lion in the ark of prophet Noah peace be upon him, where people begged to be saved from the lion and mice. That's why cats were created, they are protectors.

@LouDPhillips and all other cat lovers, take a look at this lovely thread!
One of the best threads I would ever share on twitter 😎

The Egyptian love affair with cats, as you say, far predates Islam. There are stories from Roman times about foreigners in Alexandria getting in (what they saw as) crazy trouble for kicking a cat. There would be instant lynch mobs on the mere rumor that someone hurt a cat.

The history of domestication of cats is somewhat tortuous, discussed in detail in The Domestic Cat: cambridge.org/core/books/the… As for Egypt, Serpell writes: "The earliest known cat remains from Mostagedda in Egypt, dating from sometime before 6000 years ago, ... (Malek, 1993)."
Best thread of the day! Cats in Cairo.

Such a fan I am of this twitter account. Not just for the cat threads but othe fascinating information as well 😊
🤣 "domesticated" cats...have yet to see one..more like first place to convince cats to tolerate humans
The only thread you need today.
funny how cats aren't domesticated because it's their house, not yours. you feed them only for them to resent you and judge you
Cats are mysterious creatures and Egypt is a mysterious place.
Want to go there and solve all mysteries. Heaven for me. ❤

الميااااو جاءت أولاً ثم جاء التاريخ!
It's usually only desperate circumstances that would justify posting cat pics but as I'm living in Egypt at the moment I think I can make an exception for these cats of Cairo from the ever reliable @BaytAlFann

You’ve failed to portray their more viscous side 😾

Any theories as to why? Possibly involving what effect the electrostatic magnification had on the cats brains? Possibly bringing forth much more and enhancing abilities we no longer see from them today?
This thread made me think of the sahabi Abu Hurairah (RA) and his memorable kunya: Father of the Kitten 🥺
