someone: oh my gosh, you’re writing a book?! what’s it about?
me: okay, so it’s about this woman who… um, you know the feeling when… okay, let me put it this way: someone dies and then… no, i gotta back up, it all starts…
someone: *eyes glossed over* wow, sounds great…

Along with, "You self-published? Because your book didn't sell?" No, it's not a pension plan but it's sold over 500 copies and there are copies of it held in all the UK National Libraries. How many copies of YOUR book have sold? Oh that's right - you've not written anything.

I write true crime. Usually the person says “ohhhhhhh” and backs away slowly.

I feel like I need a pamphlet or something to give out to people. Otherwise my stories about space freelancers or demonic possessions sounds like a toddler wrote them

Work on that elevator speech. It comes in handy with that question.

😂😂😂 You crack me up because it’s like looking in a mirror. Except with my picture books being 300-800 words, I should be able to summarize them better, right? Wrong. Am following.

It's especially hard when it's a complicated plot - which path do I take in explaining it?

Too funny! This is why I never tell anyone what my book is about. I am so bad at it.

A fellow worker at my job is also writing a story, and when we discuss both of ours back and forth, we're stumbling out words left and right 😆

I think you've described one of the reasons people seem indifferent to us writers. I was taught not to 'brag' and I've always been rubbish at 'selling' myself. Question is, how to overcome that base programming. Suggestions anyone?

Anytime I’m asked about what I’m writing, my brain shuts off and I search for an immediate change of topic. I’ve grown more confident in my writing lately but still have that defensive side convincing me others will find my ideas utterly stupid if I dare tell them even the title.

Getting that elevator pitch down pat is a difficult thing to do.

I usually say about 286 pages so far. If they press I say love, despair and redemption. If that isn't good enough I say, I'll sell you a copy when it's done.
