When I moved to Denmark 17 years ago, it was still common for parents to park their sleeping kids outside while they ate dinner in a cafe. I made a typically American comment about child abduction, and a Danish friend responded, "No one wants your kid."

Same country where bestiality was OK until 2015 and a touristic attraction!

If the parents try to reclaim their child, whoever has the greater number of Lego® sets is awarded custody

Dane here: This is a fact. One time I got lost for 1 hour and 59 minutes as a kid. There were hundreds of middle aged women ready to claim me. If you listen closely you could hear faint whispers… “My precious…” I’ve never been so scared.. Luckily my mom found me last minute.

Okay, let's clear up some misunderstandings here. We call it "surprise adoption", but there are rules. 1) No more than 10 kids at a time. 2) We have child labour laws, so you can't just fill up your factory with kids from the street. 3) They get to challenge you to a duel at 18

As a Dane I can confirm this. There is a reason Danes are considered the happiest people in the world. Misplacing your kids around Christmas and birthdays is quite common. It’s a good trick to save some extra cash in the rough months

Dane here, this is completely true. We sometimes drive to the german boarder and sell them, they're about 30 dkk each, it depends on the size though.

I believe this is because back in the day they didnt really have safe abortions so they just left newborn kids to the wolfs quite literally in many parts of norther europe and so this law is probably there so people who wanted to savr the kids could become their legal parent

In reply to @TerribleMaps
Well, going by the comments, at least we all know now that the Danes have a great sense of humour!

It makes it morally much easier for us to get rid of the children we don’t like 🙏. I wonder what people in the pink countries do 🤷‍♂️

אז אולי עדיף לוותר על דנמרק?

Fun fact there is even a lost Child section in supermarkets, where you could pick your favorit Child, and/or deliver yours if you are unhappy with what you got....

In reply to @TerribleMaps
Also legal in Russia, provided you "find" the child in Ukraine.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
This is misinformation. The law applies for children under 18 and seniors above 65. And only natives not tourists.

Check the responses from Denmark. :D

I keep getting sent this map and I can't find anything about what law or case verdict this is in reference to lmfao

This sounds like that totally 100% real rule in high school where you could go home if the teacher didn’t show up for 20 minutes 😂

Wait, isn’t this how Gojo got Megumi? :p

In reply to @TerribleMaps
Is there an age limit? Does lost adult children count. Asking for a friend.

To już wiem gdzie się przeprowadzam :)

In reply to @TerribleMaps
In Denmark, no one have their own children anymore.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
Wait, is child labor also legal there? Otherwise I don't see the point of claiming a random kid for nothing in return. 😛😂

In reply to @TerribleMaps
who wanna go half on a child with me?? idk i would wanna live in russia tho

In reply to @TerribleMaps
You mean I could get adopted in Denmark? Hold my beer let me book a ticket. Do they claim adults too? I promise I don’t cry and I’m not as annoying as children 🥲

It's true because it's on Twitter.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
Hhmm, on the other hand it would spare me the effort of finding a wife having to knock her up and putting up with the BS for 9 months. Just go to DK instead and look for unattended kids, hey Ma guess what? You're a Grandma now!

Lots of danish people replying to this but honestly someone has to explain how this works to me

No problem. They are all called Jensen, Andersen, Petersen, Larsen, Paulsen, Nielsen... So they know they are sons of Jen, sons of Ander, sons of Peter, sons of Lars…

In reply to @TerribleMaps
I’m assuming this is one of those 300 year old laws that nobody got around to changing because who the hell would do that? I mean it’s Denmark, it’s probably harder to close off all mall exits than their border in case of abduction.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
How old does the “child” need to be? Is 40 too old?

In reply to @TerribleMaps
The swinging child silhouette looks exactly like the UK right next to it. I got stuck looking at that trying to figure out what it had to do with it.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
By far the best about Denmark I have heard in decades. And yes, of course it's true.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
Sounds fucked up, but it could mean that if a child is lost for 2 hours and an adult finds them, it is their legal responsibility to keep them safe from harm until their family is found... Just a thought.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
So if I tell my kids out of the blue that we’re going to vacation in Denmark they should have no concerns.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
As a Dane I too confirm this being true. Had to find out the hard way, that it is not quite as easy to find a new family in other countries. Due to global decline of sperms quality, we welcome visitors with children and always carry a stop watch.

In reply to @TerribleMaps
So lemme get this straight. If a kid is lost in this country for >2hours, you can just straight out adopt them?

In reply to @TerribleMaps
Lol… I suspect this is know as abduction in Denmark just like the rest of the world… though if true, I recon lots of parents r putting this in their back pocket for those difficult times!
