Also... any new gym joiners out there? My first time back in a gym for many a year. I can now barely walk. What am I doing wrong? Will I be a permanent hobbler?

It’s DOMS (delayed onset of muscle soreness) the good news is it’ll pass in a couple of days. Bad news is it peaks after 48hrs! 😬

No it's weird, at first you're aching for about three days after exercising, then after a week it's one day & after 2 weeks you barely notice it. The exercise is still exhausting for a couple of months before you notice a difference in your fitness. I'm 51 & that's my experience.

Is it just DOMS? Weight/strength training causes microtears in muscle, the muscles then rebuild stronger. Rest days are good. You'll get used to it, key is not too much too soon and consistency

Joined a gym in early October. 3 times a week religiously. Don’t look forward to going but feel much better afterwards. Stick at it Hobbler!

I’m avoiding the gym. Prefer to be outside, just don’t overdo things, ease yourself into it, building up slowly.

Takes a few days to wear off but keep going and you won't notice it again

Too much too soon. It’s the body’s cruel joke. It can do way more than you thought. Once. Then you die of DOMS😂😱

Pain is just the sensation of weakness leaving the body. Now excuse me while I collapse into a sweaty heap in the corner.

That was me after the first time too, but a few weeks in and it’s getting a lot easier !

Stretching is the best way forward

Once you stop hurting, go back. Rinse and repeat until you can go 3 days a week. Do the same workout each time. I'm doing it now while getting off painkillers... cold chicken. (Given that you're in your 70s, it should take a maybe 6 weeks.) Then, talk to a personal trainer.
