Como geóloga hoy me quedo sin palabras. Un abrazo para Turquía 😕

Really puts into perspective how unusual/strong this earthquake is in Turkey.

I’m not a geologist, but multiple 7.5+ magnitude quakes seem pretty rare for this part of the world. pic.twitter.com/dNy9ko6VFa

This is unbelievable it’s hard to imagine the amount of power needed to level a castle that has stood since the Roman Empire.

2,000 year old Gaziantep castle all but destroyed. An ancient castle in the Turkish city of Gazientep has been largely destroyed by the devastating #earthquake that hit the region this morning. middleeasteye.net/discover/turke… twitter.com/xruiztru/statu…

Does that suggest the earthquake today is the only or the most powerful earthquake that castle has experienced?

(Gaziantep Castle).

Devastating. The human cost is of course much worse, but it puts into context how unprepared people were, and how historic this quake is…
😢

Worst than Nôtre-Dam burning, I'm in pain.

I want to feel for the historical loss, but man does this ever show what modern buildings had to endure! I feel for the people... I can't even imagine!

Hundreds of people dead, thousands of people injured and buildings collapsed. There are still people waiting to be saved. History is destroyed. Aftershocks are continuing. This is just awful 😔

Astonishing demonstration of the #TurkeyQuake's potency.

Tragic.
The fort saw Jesus walk the earth, Rome rise, fall and rise again.
The Holy Wars.
The Seljuks and the Ottomans.
The Fall of several Caliphates.
Aquinas, Augustine, Vergil and Cicero.
Now it is rubble.
A tragedy.

Gone in a flash. Hug your loved ones.

This is wild. Every video coming out of Turkiye is wild. I am a loss for words for the damage and hurt of the people there.

Wow...the reports coming out of Turkey are frightening. 7.8 is a huge fn earthquake, and it happened right underneath a major city with old or poorly constructed towers built throughout it. The death toll is likely to be in the thousands.

Just listened to a video on YouTube on how the Romans had to keep rebuilding Antioch after it kept getting destroyed by catastrophic earthquakes again and again.

this is some serious possible evidence of how strong and rare this quake was for this specific region.

Something that old predates both Christianity & Islam.
Will be interesting if they dig & find something even older in the mound below
