“European Arrest Warrants were introduced to tackle terrorism not target political opponents”

...Great stuff from @C_Stihler_MEP on why those who believe in the UK union should support Clara Ponsati

L'ex-líder dels laboristes escocesos i diputada al Parlament d'Edimburg donant suport a Clara Ponsatí. Aprèn-ne, @miqueliceta.

This reminds me of the good old days in Scottish politics, a time when there could be agreement - even on controversial things like it not being a good thing for a government to order the arrest and imprisonment of its political opponents. Nostalgia, eh?

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP Good to see one or two Scottish Labour politicians oppose the twisted use of European Arrest Warrants simply to silence & punish those with different political views.

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP In Spain courts designed to tackle terrorism, algside drug draffickers and international crime are also targeting those supporting Catalan political opponents. This is an inferno, my nerves won't stand this unless the EAWs are thrown out.

@ClaraPonsati

@kezdugdale To tackle terrorism? Just one of the 32 categories of crime. e-justice.europa.eu/content_europe…

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP Do you think we should harbour all criminals or just political ones

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP Thats just childish nonsense , they are for all sorts of crimes , UK brought lots of UK Criminals back from Spain by this method , far far far more than any number of Terrorists brought back to the UK.

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP As I understand it ! This is a legal system issue ? Thank god nothing to do with politicians , as for Euro/arrest warrants are to tackle terrorism? We allow jihadi fighters to come and go as they please

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP Unless your Murdo Fraser or @ScotTories! He may well enjoy Spanish holidays but I wouldn’t visit St Andrews any time soon if I was him!

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP She broke the law and must be locked up.

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP What line would you draw where you would not comply with an EAW request? Not challenging - just interested

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP No, we were led to believe that "European Arrest Warrants "were introduced to tackle terrorism, in fact it is just another weapon to undermine free speech and orchestrated terrorist events are another weapon

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP Next time you grant the right for a foreign country to deport any of us at will just remember that a verbal promise of "it's only for terrorism" doesn't mean a thing. Campaign to end the European Arrest Warrant.

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP They have broken the law in Spain so hand them over

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP We can’t support lawlessness. The individuals in question held an illegal vote in violation of a court order and declared independence under baseless circumstances.

Credit where it's due, the overreach and evolution of the purpose of the European arrest warrant was seen at the outset by the eurosceptic right. A broken clock is right twice a day.

@kezdugdale @europatweets @C_Stihler_MEP Bullshit. You are an ignorant swallowing nationalists’ propaganda. Catalan separatists have been free to advocate for an independent Catalonia since Spain is a democracy, so NO, they are NOT prosecuted for their political views.

@kezdugdale @C_Stihler_MEP The pacific catalan secessionists poor victims. Ponsati participated to unilateral violation of parliamentary statuatory and constitutional rules in catalan parliament in october 6 2017. She is not a victim. You help antidemocratIc methods by supporting people promoting them.

Spain has to stop to imprison ideas and believes. They suppose to convince the Catalans with facts not with violence and repression.
