Would you move to a narrowboat to save money?

House prices and rents are on the rise, and experts say boats are both cheaper to buy and cheaper to heat too.

Would you consider jumping ship and living life on the water?

Moorings are very had to come by in the Thames area and there is a 4 year waiting list. So don't set your hopes on this option in the short-term. Also the river banks flood in winter and unless your boat is tethering to a very large tree will be damaged and become inaccessible!

Love to but I'd be too afraid to sleep due to drunken and drugged up youths marauding around the footpath and my boat. No doubt they would stick a lighter in for good measure 😉

Which experts are those? There are so many things to consider before committing to living on a boat and they’re not all related to money.

A friend has just started living on one but not to save money, just fancied it. Too small and claustrophobic for me though

I actually would consider it…but I don’t live in an area where narrowboats are a viable option…I don’t think anyway.

Currently living aboard and there are lots of hidden costs. Mooring fees, diesel, electricity, canal and river licensing, insurance, waste pump out and daily things going wrong. However, you do have views like this on your doorstep (not our boat). pic.twitter.com/jHI2VLYe40

My dream has always been to live on a barge. Absolutely love them. But they're not cheap to run/maintain
