Should rent be frozen across the UK?

A new survey for the charity Shelter has found a third of renters spend at least half of their household income on rent.

Nicola Surgeon has frozen rents in Scotland.

Should the rest of the UK do the same?

How can you freeze rents. Lots of Landlords have one property with a mortgage on it which the rent covers. The mortgage rate has gone up so the properties will be either reposessed for non payment or the Landlord will have to sell. Thus making the tenants homeless. Catch 22

Prices landlords are asking for is scandalous for some houses .yea a freeze is fair for all .

If you freeze rent then why not freeze mortgages.

Given that our rent has just gone up by £100 per month, £1,200 per year, this sounds like a good idea. So many that have been helped by charities that I have worked with are facing homelessness because of the cynical exploitation by landlords. We must have a system that stops it.

Rents usually won't go up till the financial year beginning next April so what Sturgeon has announced in Scotland is a con anyway.

Absolutely! Over half of our income goes on rent…..

Freeze rent, or bring a rent cap.

Yes of course we should freeze rents and then when the property owners can no longer afford the morgage and they have their houses repossesed and the tenants thrown out onto the streets then we wont have to worry about the costs of renting in the UK,easy solution, problem gone

Yes. But I can understand if the landlord has a mortgage on the rented property why they do have to increase the rent. But if it mortgage free then put a cap on it.
