I think the argument here is that we've all been living it up at the expense of the richest people in society and now it's time for that to end.

At least with the first wave of austerity the government tried to convince us that 'we're all in this together' and that good times would return. Not even a pretence of that this time.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Alternatively, I’d argue the Conservative Party have had 12 years to manage the country’s finances and miserably failed. The country can no longer afford the Conservative Party.

yes ! a.... DIS...GRACE really

Says the Levelling Up secretary. 🤯

First time round, austerity was needed because 'the nation's credit card was maxed out', Now it's needed merely to feed the naked greed of our faceless £Billionaires. How can Britain prosper without a new ruling class to replace our threadbare aristocracy?

In reply to @AdamBienkov
As the old saying goes "give to the greedy and not the needy"

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Only the top 10% of earners pay enough tax to cover their costs; everyone else is technically a burden on the state. So, yes, by "all", you're pretty much correct.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
So for 12 years apparently we’ve been living a champagne lifestyle & now we have to pay for it doubt that’s going to wash this time😡

In reply to @AdamBienkov
One of the most disgusting things this amoral government will do. Absolutely shameless.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Let's trim the fat by stopping ludicrous MP expenses such as having your fuel bills paid etc Parliament is a gravy train for grasping MPs if it was run like a business it would gone bust years ago.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
What does this large 'welfare state' consist of? Does it include state education, the NHS, social care? Is it implying there's a distinct dividing line between the welfare state and the public sector as a whole?

Austerity was never over...It was justified by the Media, pic.twitter.com/eMRBdQvhke

Reverse robin hood.. the Tories wont be happy until we go back to medieval feudalism

Some Tories have, of course, stated quite openly that food banks are a good thing, except when they make people too comfortable with their poverty... pic.twitter.com/kMmnIBJxQ7

To be honest, a few years when Brit commentators were advising Greeks ‘living beyond their means’ to eat out of garbage bins, I thought it was bigoted savagery. But now they’re giving the same advice to their own people. Consistent, at least.

Austerity has been at the heart of everything the Tories have done SINCE THEY CAME TO POWER. So this "new austerity"...how's that going to work, for people who's belts are already on their last notch? I'll tighten my belt when we're all wearing the same size pants!!!

In reply to @AdamBienkov
sadly 45B of tax cuts for the rich have just happened. force of nature, so gotta tighten the belt

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Why is just(at the moment) 5% of our Economy-the HospitalityIndustry expected 2pay 15% of all the Nations Business Rates? There’ll be a big shortfall as a result of the decimation of our Industry which has been subsidising Big Businesses that are OfficeBased etc Time4Fair BizRates

Trim the fat? There IS no fat. No muscle either; just notched, scarred bone.

In reply to @AdamBienkov

You food bank users who have been sanctioned for 3 months and have to pay bedroom tax have been having things too good for too long.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Tough being in the 1 % have a heart. Hey buddy can you spare a Daimler.

Well - no shit.
Billionaires should have been taxed out of existence long ago. This lunacy is unsustainable - we are going to see social discontent of the highest proportion.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
These that's should come and see the school l'm working at and show me the fat to trim. The place is falling apart so badly it's sad.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
“A New Age of Austerity” Such timing. Back around the time of the coronation, people were hoping that the United Kingdom was entering a “New Elizabethan Age”.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
The Tories have had 12 years in power and they have left things to cut? How is the state not running at an optimum level of funding and function by their reckoning? Are they actually listening to themselves?

There'll now be a lucrative market in private helicopter flights up to #Castleford to trickle down their bonus payments into the tills at Schofields, The Junction, Blue Cup, Batesons, Market Tap etc, etc.
I think that's how it's meant to work.
Isn't it?

A handful of utter oddities in thrall to libertarian voodoo economics are set to ruin the lives of millions of people in this country, while framing it as inevitable. Their favourite game: 'quelling the masses'. Sound familiar? pic.twitter.com/AlHbn014CX

In reply to @AdamBienkov
We never left austerity. Public services are so far past being able to do their jobs .....there is nothing left to cut back unless we take them away altogether.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Plenty of "fat" to trim, lets start by all those in Whitehall refusing to work in Whitehall. Then there's the religion of #NHS gorging through seemingly unlimited amounts of taxpayers money.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Austerity is Levelling Up. War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
We do not have a large welfare state when compared to other countries Id our size

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Third world UK. That's what they want.

This is the usual scapegoating. Turning the poor, sick, vulnerable into the enemy to justify their cruelty. They’ve been doing it for 12 years, mark my words, they’ll do the same now. #EnoughIsEnough #ToryCostOfGreedCrisis

In reply to @AdamBienkov
It’s like no one ever voted Brexit or something.

In reply to @AdamBienkov

This news article from @SimonClarkeMP supposedly ‘levelling up sec’ we are truly moving back to the era I grew up in where the poor were treated as an inconvenience!

Bunch of moochers living the high life like kramer. Time to end it innit

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Yep, the party's over. You've had your fun. Get back in line

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Utter nonsense. We’ve been trying to get by and over reacted to covid on the back of the national credit card. Tory economic competence on the floor.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
We've been living a life we couldn't afford

In reply to @AdamBienkov
I think the argument is that you’re one of the fools.

The only fools here are the people at the bottom of the social ladder who still think the Tories are looking after their best interests and keep voting for them!

Err…Adam, you got that the wrong way round! The rich have been living it up at the expense of the rest of us since the 1980’s! The share of wealth of the richest 5% has risen MASSIVELY . Banker’s bonuses, executive pay rising exponentially….

In reply to @AdamBienkov
She has NO mandate for this!

In reply to @AdamBienkov
As ever it won't start at the top, but it should...let's see MPs cut their annual expense claims by half for a start.

In reply to @dave43law
Indeed. Despicable. Sickening.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
that’s the caviar off the shopping list from aldi.. they’ve heated swimming pools to maintain whilst most of us are worried about turning the heating on, so selfish of us to not think of those far well off than we are.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
As if we are NOT going to need welfare when all these SMEs collapse due to #EnergyCrisis making millions of employees redundant and forcing them into an even deeper #CostOfLivingCrisis. Truss, Kwarteng, Odey et al have effectively shorted @bankofengland and they’ll do it again.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
You do understand the argument that due to the efforts of the lower paid, the better paid get more out of taxes? Is this not the idea of people giving back or do you believe in entitlement?

In reply to @AdamBienkov
Really @SimonClarkeMP you shouldn't talk about "trimming the fat" when the Health Secretary is in hearing! Naughty!

In reply to @AdamBienkov
The most damning thing about that article is that it took two of the chinless wonders to write the thing

In reply to @AdamBienkov
If we 'trim the fat' perhaps we could get down there with Turkey and Mexico. pic.twitter.com/rtie8SXVyi

Oh those poor poor rich

Unadulterated class war. We should take it back to them.

In reply to @AdamBienkov
So ‘Levelling Up’ Secretary says we’ve had it too good

In reply to @AdamBienkov
The ‘large welfare state’? This is like putting your greyhound on a diet because you can only see some of its ribs.
