Apparently as of 2019, 1/357th of the world's electricity consumption went to Bitcoin.

@Noahpinion One day, many years from now, we’ll find out Satoshi Nakamoto was really an electric company executive with an amazing idea to create demand for his product.

@Noahpinion How much was consumed by all the banks, their personnel, their computing, and all expenses on security for all the world’s currencies?

@Noahpinion This nonsense is spread by folks that have zero understanding of the industry. Mining facilities are vastly build near hydro power plants. Why? Because they create oversupply of power that can’t be stored. BTC miners gobble up some of the oversupply before it is wasted in nature.

How can this be ever be considered a candidate for payments? It is not even an interesting asset if it depletes resources at that rate? https://t.co/qfvm6pRZNm

@Noahpinion Every year, one day of electricity production worldwide goes to Bitcoin.

@Noahpinion I remember when Bitcoin was like, sort of neat if suspect, with funny headlines every time the market inevitably dipped.

And now here it is consuming more electricity than industrialized nations.

@Noahpinion The traditional banking infrastructure and FIAT currency systems are significantly more environmentally unfriendly when you consider transportation, material costs, so on and so on. Don't forget to add to that the number of people involved in sustaining the FIAt sys.

@Noahpinion I believe that in the end, transaction costs more than anything are what's going to kill Bitcoin.

Those electricity costs get docked from your speculation wins.

Bitcoin dying by high transaction costs is really quite ironic, but I believe that's the endgame.

@Noahpinion The thing that doesn't capture is the carbon released by it. I know that, as a whole, it's more green than the average power since $ per kWH is wildly important, therefore it likes hydroelectric, geothermal, etc. Ideally, can push harder for use cases for more green energy.

@Noahpinion And it’ll continue to accelerate, by design. I have to wonder how long we’ll tolerate this level of waste.

@Noahpinion @Nouriel Why do I feel like bitcoin is going to end up like that Albanian Ponzi scheme and end up taking down governments when it collapses in on itself. I struggle to think of a more useless usage of energy, stone age currency in a digital mask.

@Noahpinion Consider that Bitcoin is held / transacted by FAR fewer than 1/357th of the world's population.

If a far larger number of people actually had / used BTC, then it would collapse the world's energy infrastructure.

This entire design is unsustainable.
